The Urgency for Clean Power in Hong Kong
Hong Kong’s path to net zero by 2050 demands bold solutions to decarbonise its power sector. While renewable energy sources like solar and wind are expanding, they face space constraints and intermittency challenges. This makes hydrogen energy a critical enabler, offering flexible, zero-emission power that integrates with existing infrastructure.
At Zemission Limited, we have pioneered a unique approach — transforming towngas into high-purity hydrogen and using it in a Fuel Cell and a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system to achieve over 85% total energy efficiency.
The Zemission Process: From TownGas to Hydrogen
Our Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) system extracts hydrogen directly from Hong Kong’s existing towngas network after gas compression. This breakthrough means:
- No need for dedicated hydrogen pipelines
- Minimal infrastructure disruption
- Lower upfront costs compared to importing hydrogen
The extracted hydrogen feeds into a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell that generates electricity for electric vehicle (EV) chargers. The residual gas — still rich in calorific value, with majority being methane— fuels a CHP system, producing additional electricity and hot water for on-site use.

Real-World Application: Powering Sports & Sustainability
We implemented this technology at PADEL+ Sai Kung, Hong Kong’s first padel club. The system now powers EV chargers, provides hot water for showers, and supplies extra electricity to the site — all while reducing carbon emissions.
Key outcomes include:
- Over 85% energy efficiency through heat and power recovery
- Reduced carbon footprint by replacing grid electricity with low-carbon power
- Showcasing a working microgrid that integrates multiple energy streams
Why Hydrogen & CHP Matter for Net Zero
Hydrogen is more than a fuel — it’s an energy bridge. By pairing hydrogen with CHP, Zemission delivers:
- Higher efficiency: Capturing heat that traditional power generation wastes
- Lower emissions: Replacing fossil-fuel-intensive electricity with low-carbon energy
- Grid resilience: On-site generation reduces dependency on centralised power plants

Scaling the Impact
Our system proves that hydrogen solutions can be modular, decentralised, and commercially viable. Scaling this technology could mean:
- Supporting Hong Kong’s transition to a low-carbon economy
- Retrofitting existing town gas networks to supply hydrogen for buildings and EVs
- Deploying microgrid CHP systems in commercial complexes, sports venues, and hospitals
Zemission’s Commitment
At Zemission, we are committed to advancing renewable energy innovation and supporting Hong Kong’s net-zero targets. By turning town gas into clean hydrogen power, we are bridging today’s infrastructure with tomorrow’s sustainable energy systems.
